COMMON AIR CONDITIONING PROBLEMS
- Freezing Up:
More commonly, the cause is a dirty air filter, which causes cold air to build up inside the unit. Another possibility is a refrigerant leak, which requires immediate professional attention.
- Constant Cycling: Your air conditioner should cycle on and off occasionally throughout the day, but if it does so frequently, there might be an issue. One common cause is an issue with the power supply, so check for rusty or corroded wires. Constant cycling may also indicate that your unit is improperly sized for your home.
- Blank Thermostat: Your thermostat needs batteries. There is no longer 24V going to the thermostat, which usually indicates the float switch has shut off for safety. This means your drain line is clogged and needs to be cleared.
Helpful Tips
- Most air filters need to be cleaned or replaced every month. If your air conditioner uses disposable filters, get your replacements from an authorized dealer; the generic filters available at your hardware store will reduce the system's efficiency.
- If your air conditioner has a reusable filter, clean only according to the manufacturer's instructions. Doing otherwise could damage the filter.
- Set your thermostat as high or as low as you can comfortably tolerate during the summer and winter months, respectively. For most people, that's between 75- and 79 degrees Fahrenheit for cooling and around 70 degrees Fahrenheit for heating. How you program your thermostat can mean the difference between energy savings and high energy bills.
- Don't set your thermostat several degrees lower than the ideal temperature to get rid of the heat. This won't cool your home faster and will only lead to wasted energy and unnecessary wear and tear on the unit.
- Use ceiling fans! They work with your air conditioner to lower energy costs by helping to circulate cool air. Look for Energy Star rated fans to maximize your savings.
